Update - April 2006 We just read in the Haggadah that each individual must remember the sense of slavery in Egypt and feel as if he or she personally experienced the Exodus from bondage. Unfortunately, in today’s reality, this emotion is easier to conjure than for others -- and Z.P.’s letter, below, poignantly illustrates this point:
April 4, 2006 Today, after 15 years of bondage, I feel that I am finally experiencing the Exodus from Egypt, the transition from slavery to freedom. I feel like a bird, or maybe even a butterfly. I had lost hope until I met you, the angel who finally rescued me. For years, I ran from lawyer to lawyer for in a futile bid for assistance. All of my precious resources were wasted: time, energy and money. I suffered tremendous emotional anguish. I lost my youth. You restored my sense of trust and gave me back my self-confidence. You performed your job in the most efficient, effective and professional manner without asking for anything; you warmly and patiently explained everything to me, and you proved to me that justice does exist, and that it is forbidden to despair. Today I walk with my head held high. I am proud that in the State of Israel there are women advocates within the religious courts, that there is such a thing as a Legal Aid Center. You are amazing. You are one-of-a-kind. Thank you for everything you have done for me. The profession you have chosen fits you like a glove. Continue to be strong… and most importantly: continue to help other women like me. Warmly, Z.P.
